Brittle

Glass illustrates why these words cannot be interchanged: it can be hard and stiff but also brittle. It may resist scratching yet fracture when struck.

If a force shifts one layer of ions, ions with the same charge can come alongside one another. Their repulsion makes the crystal split rather than change shape: ionic solids are brittle.
