The inner lining of the uterus, which thickens in preparation for the implantation of an embryo.

Revise: Menstrual CycleThe thickened uterus lining is no longer maintained, so it breaks down and leaves the body with blood through the vagina. This is menstruation, or a period, and it marks the start of a new cycle.
When interpreting a cycle diagram or graph, link a rising or high hormone level to its effect on the uterus lining rather than merely describing the line.
Keep the hormone roles distinct: oestrogen rebuilds and thickens the uterus lining; progesterone maintains it after ovulation.
