Specification 7.4, 7.5 · Paper 2
A hormone produced by the ovary after ovulation that maintains the uterus lining during the second part of the menstrual cycle.
On a hormone graph, identify the hormone from the shape and timing of its peak: the sharp LH surge occurs at about ovulation, whereas progesterone rises mainly after ovulation.
Keep the hormone roles distinct: oestrogen rebuilds and thickens the uterus lining; progesterone maintains it after ovulation.
For an ‘explain’ question, link hormones with causal verbs: FSH stimulates oestrogen secretion; oestrogen inhibits FSH and stimulates LH; LH triggers ovulation; progesterone inhibits FSH and LH.

If pregnancy has not occurred, concentrations of oestrogen and progesterone fall. The thickened uterus lining is no longer maintained, so it breaks down and leaves the body with blood through the vagina. This is menstruation, or a period, and it marks the start of a new cycle.
Specification B3.2c, B3.2d · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
A hormone produced by the ovary after ovulation that maintains the thickened uterine lining.
Revise: Hormones in human reproductionAfter ovulation, the ovary produces progesterone, which maintains the thickened lining while pregnancy is possible.
A hormone released by the corpus luteum after ovulation; it maintains the uterine lining and inhibits FSH and LH.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
A hormone secreted by the remains of the follicle after ovulation that maintains the uterus lining and inhibits FSH and LH release.
Revise: Hormone InteractionsFSH and LH come from the pituitary gland; oestrogen and progesterone are produced in the ovaries. What matters is not just what each hormone does, but how one hormone changes the release of another.
