Revise: Microscope TechnologyTEM therefore reveals internal cell ultrastructure at very high resolution. It can show ribosomes and fine internal details of mitochondria and chloroplasts that cannot be resolved clearly with an ordinary light microscope.

This fine detail is called cell ultrastructure. Electron microscopy therefore did more than make familiar images larger: it supplied new evidence about which sub-cellular structures exist, where they occur and how they are organised.
