Revise: Microscope TechnologyA scanning electron microscope (SEM) scans a narrow electron beam across the surface of a specimen, which is commonly given an extremely thin coating of a heavy metal such as gold. Detectors record electrons scattered from the surface. SEM images reveal surface shape and have a three-dimensional appearance, although their resolution and commonly used magnification are lower than those of TEM images.
