A species whose presence, absence or abundance provides evidence about environmental conditions, such as pollution.
Revise: Indicator SpeciesAn indicator species is useful because its presence, absence or abundance is associated with particular conditions. Surveying several species gives evidence of the biological effects of pollution. It does not directly measure how much of a pollutant is present.
