Revise: Indicator SpeciesBloodworms and sludgeworms can tolerate water with little dissolved oxygen, so finding many of them may indicate polluted water. Freshwater shrimps and stonefly nymphs need cleaner, oxygen-rich water; their presence supports a conclusion that pollution is low. These are patterns of evidence, not absolute rules.
