The fossils that have been found, together with evidence of their ages.

All the fossil evidence discovered, providing a record of organisms that lived in the past.

The fossil record therefore provides evidence that the organisms living today have not always existed in their present forms.

All the fossils that have been found, together with information about their ages.

All the fossils that have been discovered, together with their positions and ages in rock.

The fossil record provides evidence of change while remaining an incomplete history of life.

The fossil record brings together fossils and evidence of their ages. Fossils in older rock can be compared with those from more recent rock and with organisms alive today. Some fossils resemble living species but also have different features.

Explain an incomplete fossil record using both biological and geological reasons: many early organisms were soft-bodied, and geological activity destroyed many traces that did form.

For fossil evidence, explain what the fossil record shows and why it is incomplete; do not merely define a fossil.
