Decay

One route to fossil formation begins when at least one condition needed for decay is absent. Decomposers carry out decay effectively only under suitable conditions, so remains may persist where conditions are hostile to them.

Decay is the breakdown of biological material. Instead of merely stating that one sample decayed, a rate describes how quickly a measurable change occurred. The measurement might be a loss of mass, a change in pH or the time taken to reach a fixed endpoint.
