Revise: Chemical plant defencesAn antimicrobial substance is a chemical that kills microorganisms or stops them growing. By reducing the growth of an invading microorganism, these substances can limit damage to plant tissue and make it harder for an infection to spread through the plant.

Revise: Chemical Plant DefencesOne important response is the production of antimicrobial substances. “Anti” means against and “microbial” refers to microorganisms. These substances may kill pathogens or inhibit their growth and reproduction.
When asked for a chemical plant defence, name an antimicrobial substance and state its effect: it kills microorganisms or stops their growth.
Avoid saying that antimicrobial substances kill every kind of pathogen. Different substances act against particular microorganisms; for example, antibacterial chemicals act against bacteria.
Link each stage clearly: pathogen detected → antimicrobial substances produced → pathogen killed or its growth inhibited → infection is limited.
