Revise: Factors affecting decompositionWater can fill the air spaces in waterlogged material, reducing the oxygen available. This can limit aerobic respiration and slow decomposition.
Link each factor to decomposer activity: temperature affects enzyme-controlled reactions, water is needed for reactions and transport, and oxygen permits aerobic respiration.
When comparing aerobic and anaerobic decomposition, make clear that decomposition can occur without oxygen, but it is usually slower because anaerobic respiration releases less energy.
