Specification 3.20 · Paper 1
A characteristic that develops during an organism’s lifetime because of its environment rather than being inherited genetically.
Revise: Causes of VariationWhen environmental conditions cause individuals to develop different phenotypes, this is environmental variation. Such differences are also called acquired characteristics because they are acquired during the organism’s lifetime. A scar may form after an injury, and the language a person speaks depends on the language they experience and learn.
An acquired characteristic develops because of environmental conditions during an organism’s lifetime. It is not automatically passed to offspring.
