Component 02 reading questions
What you need to know
Reading unseen fiction and literary non-fiction with confidence: extracts from novels, short stories and autobiography, working out who is who, the narrator's viewpoint, the setting and the main ideas.
Using the short introduction to each text and its genre, such as a ghost story, to inform your reading, and tracking how tension and mood build.
Practises all four Component 02 reading questions.
The worked example uses two linked stories of fear in a dark house at night, both printed in the lesson: Text 1, the ending of W. W. Jacobs's story 'The Monkey's Paw' (1902), and Text 2, from Algernon Blackwood's story 'The Empty House' (1906).
Sentence starters and a short checklist for using the skill in the exam.
