Component 01 writing
What you need to know
Component 01 Questions 5 and 6 (40 marks, answer one): a letter, an article or the words of a speech or talk, each with a set purpose and audience and three bullet points to cover, linked loosely to the theme of the reading texts.
How it is marked: 24 marks for AO5 (communication and organisation) and 16 for AO6 (vocabulary, sentences, spelling and punctuation), and planning, writing and checking in the time left after Section A.
A weaker and a stronger response to one task side by side, with the level and mark an examiner would give each for AO5 and AO6, and why.
The tasks follow on, by theme, from the two texts about Isabella Bird's climb and Captain Scott's journey to the Pole used in the reading lessons.
How much to write in the time allowed: a complete, well-developed piece with a few minutes left to check it, and why extra length only helps when the quality holds.
