Questions 1 and 2: the stepped questions
Answering Section A
What you need to know
How Questions 1 and 2 work: a stepped question on each film of the pair, Question 1 on the 1930–60 film and Question 2 on the 1961–90 film, each worth 15 marks.
Part (a) asks you to identify an example (1 mark), part (b) to explain or outline it briefly (4 marks), and part (c) to explore it in at least one key sequence (10 marks: 5 for knowledge and 5 for analysis).
Questions set out as Eduqas sets them, with their wording and marks: a key prop and mise-en-scène, a genre convention, cinematography including lighting, and a key setting.
What 'identify' needs: a specific example from the film, such as a particular shot, prop or edit, not a general term.
Weaker and stronger answers to part (c) side by side, with the band and mark an examiner would give, and why.
Timing: about an hour for Section A, so about 18 minutes on each of these questions.
How to answer each part: the marks, and what the short identify and explain parts need as well as the extended answer, since naming a technique instead of a specific example from the film loses marks there. Practice questions to try, each headed 'Practice question' with its marks.
Quote only short lines of dialogue you're sure of, a few words at a time, and base every point on what happens in the finished film.
