Chapters 4 and 5
The plot, part by part
What you need to know
The Carew Murder Case and Incident of the Letter: the murder of Sir Danvers Carew, the search of Hyde's rooms and the forged letter.
Key quotations: 'with ape-like fury', 'hailing down a storm of blows', 'the bones were audibly shattered', 'a great chocolate-coloured pall lowered over heaven', 'a district of some city in a nightmare', 'I swear to God I will never set eyes on him again', 'Henry Jekyll forge for a murderer!'.
The fog and Soho as Gothic setting, and Utterson's choice to protect Jekyll's reputation by keeping the letter quiet.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
