What you need to know
Story of the Door, Search for Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll Was Quite at Ease: Enfield's story, the will, Utterson's meeting with Hyde, and Jekyll's reassurance.
What each chapter establishes about character and theme, with key quotations.
Key quotations: 'I incline to Cain's heresy', 'trampled calmly over the child's body', 'it was like some damned Juggernaut', 'a kind of black, sneering coolness', 'really like Satan', 'the more it looks like Queer Street, the less I ask', 'If he be Mr. Hyde', 'I shall be Mr. Seek', 'pale and dwarfish', 'Satan's signature upon a face', 'the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde'.
Setting: the door and its 'sinister block of building', and Jekyll's house as a front with a hidden back.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
