The plot, part by part
What you need to know
The second stage begins in London: Jaggers and Wemmick, Herbert Pocket and the story of Miss Havisham's jilting, the Pockets and Drummle,
Joe's awkward visit, and Pip's return to Satis House to find Estella grown up.
Key quotations: 'rather ugly, crooked, narrow, and dirty', 'all asmear with filth and fat and blood and foam', 'the dingiest collection of shabby buildings ever squeezed together in a rank corner as a club for Tom-cats', 'Would you mind Handel for a familiar name?', 'Not with pleasure, though I was bound to him by so many ties', 'Pip, dear old chap, life is made of ever so many partings welded together', 'I'm wrong in these clothes', 'She had adopted Estella, she had as good as adopted me, and it could not fail to be her intention to bring us together', 'I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be'.
London through Pip's eyes: Jaggers's office, Smithfield and Newgate, and how crime follows him from the marshes.
Context: Newgate Prison beside Jaggers's office, and the public hangings outside it.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
