The plot, part by part
What you need to know
The stranger with the file, Pip's visits to Satis House and his growing shame at home, his apprenticeship to Joe, the attack on Mrs Joe,
Biddy, and Jaggers's news of great expectations, which ends the first stage as Pip leaves for London.
Key quotations: 'Two One Pound notes', 'It's a great cake. A bride-cake. Mine!', 'You may kiss me, if you like.', 'Here is this boy which you brought up by hand', 'I am afraid I was ashamed of the dear good fellow', 'It is a most miserable thing to feel ashamed of home', 'a convict's leg-iron which had been filed asunder', 'I want to be a gentleman', 'be brought up as a gentleman,—in a word, as a young fellow of great expectations', 'Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears', 'And the mists had all solemnly risen now, and the world lay spread before me', 'May I?—May I?'.
Structure: the end of the first stage, as Jaggers's news in Chapter 18 turns Pip's daydream into fact.
How Pip's new fortune changes the way the village treats him, from Trabb the tailor to Pumblechook.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
