Paper 2 reading questions
What you need to know
The 15-mark AO2 question on Text 1: analysing how the writer's choices of language and structure hold a reader's interest across the whole text.
Why an answer must cover both language and structure to go beyond Level 2, and planning and writing within Section A's 1 hour 20 minutes, using the marks as a guide to time.
The worked example uses two linked texts about arriving at a workhouse casual ward for a night's shelter, both printed in the lesson: Text 1 from George Orwell's memoir 'Down and Out in Paris and London' (1933) and Text 2 from Jack London's 'The People of the Abyss' (1903).
What separates the levels, in our own words, and a model answer with the level and mark an examiner would give, and why.
A weaker and a stronger answer to the same task side by side, with what lifts the weaker one to the next level.
Sentence starters for the question and a short checklist of the steps, for students aiming at Grade 4 and above.
