Genetic Inheritance
What you need to know
Define key genetic terminology: gamete, chromosome, gene, allele, dominant, recessive, homozygous, heterozygous, genotype, and phenotype.
Explain how alleles operate at a molecular level to determine characteristic phenotypes.
Differentiate between dominant and recessive alleles and their expression in homozygous and heterozygous genotypes.
Understand that while some traits are determined by single genes, most phenotypic features result from complex interactions of multiple genes.
Apply concepts of probability, direct proportion, and simple ratios to predict and express the outcomes of single-gene genetic crosses.
Complete and interpret Punnett square diagrams and family trees to analyse genetic inheritance.
(HT only) Construct accurate genetic crosses using Punnett squares and apply advanced probability theory to make phenotypic predictions.
