One of the non-overlapping groups into which a population is divided before taking a stratified sample.

Revise: Stratified samplingEach group is called a stratum; the plural is strata. In proportional stratified sampling, larger strata contribute more members to the sample, and smaller strata contribute fewer. Members are then selected randomly within each stratum.
Use the whole population size in the denominator, not the size of another stratum.
When describing the method, include random selection within each stratum; calculating group sizes alone does not select a stratified sample.
