The total of the values in a sample divided by the number of values in that sample.

Revise: Distribution of sample meansThe important principle is that sample means are more closely distributed than individual values from the same population. In other words, the means tend to cluster more tightly around a central value and show less variation.
The sum of the observed values divided by the number of observations in the sample.
Check whether you are comparing individual measurements or sample means: these are two different sets of values.
For the range of sample means, subtract the smallest mean from the largest mean—not the smallest individual value from the largest.
Explain the smaller spread by referring to averaging: high and low individual values balance one another out. Sample means need not all be equal.
