The concentration of different social groups in different kinds of jobs or at different levels within occupations.
Women's participation in paid employment has increased, but occupational segregation remains. Construction is male-dominated, while nursing and childcare are female-dominated. There can also be segregation within occupations: men may occupy a disproportionate share of senior positions even where many employees are women.
