The number of divorces in relation to the married population over a stated period. ONS figures for 2017 expressed this per 1,000 married men or women aged 16 and over.

Revise: DivorceThe number of divorces is a count; the divorce rate relates divorces to the size of the married population. In 2017, ONS recorded 101,669 opposite-sex divorces in England and Wales. The rate was 8.4 divorces per 1,000 married men or women aged 16 and over, the lowest since 1973.
Component 1
A measure of divorce relative to the married population. The ONS reports rates for men and women per 1,000 married individuals.
Distinguish the number of divorces from the divorce rate. A fall in numbers does not necessarily mean that married people are less likely to divorce.
Do not claim that divorce rises every year. Identify the period and distinguish the number of divorces from the divorce rate.
