Lewis argued that these can be passed from parents to children through socialisation, helping poverty continue across generations. This is an argument about a learned culture, not biological inheritance.

A culture of poverty explanation asks whether living in poverty also produces distinctive values, attitudes and behaviours which help poverty continue. Culture means a group’s learned way of life; it is not something people inherit biologically.
