Paper 1
Revise: Beliefs About CreationThe Word is a title for the Son of God, who became human as Jesus. John later explains that “the Word became flesh” in John 1:14. This helps Christians identify the Word with Jesus rather than with the Holy Spirit or simply with spoken words.
Paper 2
A title for Jesus, the Son of God. John 1:1–3 describes the Word as divine, present in the beginning and active in creating all things.
Revise: CreationGenesis, the first book of the Bible, opens with the words, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth’ (Genesis 1:1). Creation is therefore understood as God's intentional action, not an existence without purpose. The accounts also explain humanity's relationship with God, other people and the natural world.
God’s self-expression, identified in John’s Gospel with the Son who became human as Jesus.
Distinguish the Word, meaning the Son, from the Spirit, meaning the Holy Spirit.
John 1:1–5 teaches about the Word; Genesis 1:2 provides the explicit reference to the Spirit in creation.
