Revise: Chanting in BuddhismTaking refuge means committing oneself to the Three Jewels as guides towards enlightenment; reciting the precepts expresses commitment to ethical behaviour. These chants are retained in Pali, linking practitioners with other Buddhist communities and the inherited tradition. Triratna also uses devotional recitations in local languages, including a sevenfold puja drawn from Mahayana practice.

Taking refuge means turning to these for guidance. The Buddha provides the example of awakening, the Dhamma provides the teaching, and the Sangha provides a community that preserves and practises it. Chanting the refuges expresses a commitment to follow this path.
