Sati

Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru, opposed sati, the burning of a widow on her husband’s funeral pyre. He rejected the idea that burning herself made a woman a truly devoted wife. This challenged a practice in which a widow’s life could be treated as having no independent value after her husband’s death.
