For some Buddhists, the sound itself has spiritual significance; for others, its association with compassionate or enlightened qualities is especially important.

Sacred syllables are sounds regarded as spiritually significant. Some Buddhists understand their value chiefly through the attention and attitudes they encourage; others also believe the sounds themselves have spiritual power. Their role therefore goes beyond translating words: sound, repetition, intention and the qualities associated with the mantra can all matter.
