Spiritual cleansing from sin or wrongdoing, sought through religious practices such as bathing in a sacred river.
Used by AQA
Paper 1
Revise: PilgrimageBathing in a sacred river is associated with purification. Pilgrims seek spiritual cleansing and atonement for wrongdoing; the purpose is more than washing the body. Giving money or other gifts to temples and priests is another way to support religious life and practise generosity.
Link a practice to its purpose: bathing in a sacred river expresses a hope for spiritual purification, not just physical cleanliness.
Distinguish Hindu beliefs about liberation and purification from guaranteed outcomes, and avoid suggesting that all Hindus practise pilgrimage in the same way.
