A punishment in which an offender is confined in a secure institution and deprived of liberty.

Revise: Treatment of CriminalsPrison, corporal punishment and community service work in different ways. They restrict freedom, inflict physical pain or require unpaid work. Their justification depends partly on what they achieve: protecting the public, discouraging crime, giving a deserved penalty or helping offenders change.
Distinguish a punishment from its aim: prison is a punishment; protection, deterrence and reformation are aims it may serve.
When evaluating effectiveness, distinguish intended results from guaranteed outcomes. Prison does not automatically reform offenders, and physical pain does not prove that someone will stop offending.
