Revise: Views on LawbreakersReligious and non-religious people can condemn an offence while believing that the offender deserves compassion and help. Equally, sympathy for an offender does not remove the victim’s suffering.
Explain attitudes towards the offender, not just why the crime happened: link the reason to sympathy, responsibility, support or condemnation.
Distinguish understanding a crime from justifying it. Someone can oppose the offence while supporting the offender.
In evaluation, consider the victim as well as the offender, and distinguish peaceful opposition to an unjust law from violence.
