Cremation

In Theravada communities, cremation is customary. It may be delayed while relatives carry out merit-making activities on behalf of the dead. Merit means the beneficial spiritual effects of good actions.

Cremation therefore has a religious meaning. However, it is not universal: very young children and renunciants, who have given up ordinary worldly life, may be buried because they are not thought to require purification through fire.
