Revise: Jewish Mourning RitualsThe chevra kaddisha, meaning ‘sacred society’, is a group that helps prepare Jewish people for burial. Its members carry out taharah, ritual washing and purification, and dress the deceased in simple white shrouds. These express purity and equality: differences in wealth or status should not determine the dignity someone receives in death.
