Ascetic

A prophecy said that Siddhartha would become either a great ruler or a great spiritual teacher. His father, King Suddhodana, wanted him to become a ruler. He therefore surrounded Siddhartha with luxury and tried to prevent him from seeing suffering or anything that might encourage him to become an ascetic.
