Used by AQA and Eduqas
Paper 1
The central Jewish ‘standing prayer’, consisting of blessings which praise God, ask for God's help and express thanks.
Revise: Public Acts of WorshipThe service also includes the Amidah. On occasions when the Torah is read, the congregation hears passages from the Torah scrolls, connecting worship with learning about God's teaching. Final prayers may include the Aleinu, which praises God.
Paper 3
A Jewish prayer consisting of blessings, recited standing and facing Jerusalem; central to synagogue worship.
Revise: Worship PracticesServices include opening prayers, the Shema, the Amidah and concluding prayers such as the Aleinu, which praises God. Torah readings are another important element, especially on Shabbat. The combination of prayer and reading means that worship involves both devotion to God and learning how to live.
Explain significance as well as describing actions: standing for the Amidah expresses respect for God; praying together strengthens the community.
Do not confuse the Shema, a declaration of faith, with the Amidah, the standing prayer.
