Using a substance, such as alcohol or drugs, to try to relieve distress without appropriate medical guidance.

Some people use alcohol or drugs to try to relieve psychological distress. This is called self-medication. Substance misuse can contribute to violent or antisocial behaviour, creating a possible pathway linking mental health difficulties with crime.
