An inability to access stored information because an appropriate cue is absent.

Revise: Information Processing and ForgettingRetrieval failure happens when information remains stored but cannot be accessed because an appropriate retrieval cue is absent. A cue is a trigger associated with a memory: a particular perfume, for example, might remind you of someone you knew.
For retrieval failure, state that the information is still stored but the appropriate cue is missing. Do not describe it as a memory trace disappearing.
