Revise: Introduction to Mental HealthCultural bias occurs when one culture’s standards are used to judge another. A clinician may misunderstand someone’s symptoms if they do not consider the person’s cultural context.

A feature of a test that advantages or disadvantages people because of their cultural background rather than the ability being assessed.
Avoid claiming that everyone within a culture shares the same beliefs, or that differences in diagnosis alone prove cultural bias.

Simply translating a question does not necessarily remove cultural bias: the knowledge it assumes may still be unfamiliar.
An imbalance in research that favours one culture or ethnicity, including judging other cultures by its standards or treating its findings as universal.
