A component that opens or closes a conducting path in a circuit.
Used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR
Specification 4.2.1.1 · Paper 1
Revise: Standard circuit diagram symbolsNotice the small details that distinguish similar-looking symbols. It shows an open switch; the complete circuit later shows its closed form.
Specification 10.2, 10.39 · Paper 2
A device that opens or closes a conducting path in a circuit.
Revise: Circuit DiagramsAn open switch leaves a gap in that route; a closed switch completes the connection.
A component that opens or closes a circuit so that current is stopped or allowed to flow.
Specification P3.2b · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
A component that opens or closes a conducting path to stop or allow current.
Revise: Circuit diagramsA switch controls whether there is a gap in a path. In the open-switch symbol the contacts do not meet, so that path is broken. In the closed-switch symbol the contacts meet, so the path is conducting.
Check whether a switch is open or closed: a gap in the only loop means there is no complete path.
When explaining the position of a switch or fuse, state what happens if it is placed in the neutral wire: current may stop, but the appliance remains connected to the live supply.
