Revise: Seismic Waves and the Structure of the EarthP-waves can cross that liquid layer, but their speed changes sharply at the boundary between the mantle and the outer core. Their paths bend, leaving a region where no direct P-waves arrive, before P-waves are recorded again farther round the Earth. This is the P-wave shadow zone.
