Paper 1, Paper 2
Waves produced by an earthquake that travel through the Earth and can reveal its internal structure.
Revise: Wave Applications in Detection and ExplorationAn earthquake sends seismic waves through the Earth. Instruments called seismometers record when the waves arrive and how strongly the ground moves. Two important types behave differently: faster P-waves travel through solids and liquids, whereas S-waves travel through solids but cannot travel through liquids.
Do not call S-waves infrasound: they are transverse seismic waves. Low-frequency P-waves provide the relevant link with infrasound.
