The standard unit of speed formed when distance is measured in metres and time in seconds.

The SI unit of speed, meaning the number of metres travelled each second.
Convert quantities into compatible units before substituting. For an answer in m/s, use metres and seconds.
Check that a proposed speed is realistic by reading it as a distance travelled each second. For example, walking at 1.3 m/s means covering about 1.3 m every second.
Use metres per second (m/s) unless the question asks for another unit. Do not confuse familiar road speeds in mph with values in m/s.
