Revise: Permanent and induced magnetsA piece of magnetic material does not have to be a magnet already. Put a soft-iron bar near a permanent magnet and the permanent magnet’s field can magnetise it. The iron then acts as an induced magnet, with its own north and south poles.
Attraction alone does not prove that an object is a permanent magnet: an unmagnetised magnetic material can also be attracted. Repulsion by a known magnet shows that the object is itself magnetised.
