Keep the electrical supply and joulemeter away from water, and take care with hot apparatus and the Bunsen burner.
If energy escapes to the surroundings but all the joulemeter reading is used in the calculation, the calculated specific heat capacity is usually too high.
When investigating power with a joulemeter, measure the energy transferred over a known time interval; a single energy reading does not determine power.
