Ionising ability

Definition

A radiation's ability to remove electrons from atoms and form ions as it travels through matter.

A radiation with high ionising ability produces many ions along its path. Its penetrating ability describes how readily it can pass through matter. These properties are connected: radiation that interacts frequently with atoms transfers energy rapidly, so it is usually stopped after travelling a shorter distance.
