The movement of an electron to a higher energy level after it absorbs energy, while remaining in the atom.
Revise: Electron arrangement changesIf the electron absorbs a suitable amount, it moves from a lower to a higher energy level. This is excitation. An inner electron can be excited in this way: it rises to a higher level but remains part of the atom.
Distinguish excitation from ionisation: an excited electron remains in the atom; an ionised atom has lost an outer electron.
