Specification 13.9 · Paper 2
The transfer of energy from electrical cables to the surroundings by heating.
Specification P7.2a, P7.2e, P8.2e · Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher)
The spreading of transferred energy into stores where it is less useful for the intended purpose, commonly the thermal stores of the surroundings.
Revise: Energy dissipationThis is energy dissipation: energy is transferred and spread into stores where it is less useful for the intended purpose. Friction and air resistance often cause dissipation by warming objects and their surroundings. A temperature rise in the surrounding air may be too small and spread out to be useful in practice.
The transfer of energy to the surroundings, for example when an electrical cable heats up.
