Harm caused when electric current passes through the body.
If someone touches live while also connected to earth, current can pass through their body to earth and cause an electric shock. A direct connection from live to an earthed conductor can also allow a very large fault current, which may cause heating or fire. A protective device may then disconnect the supply, but the connection is dangerous and must not be treated as safe.
